One Man Steel Band- Caribbean Musical Night by Micheal George in Kuwait
This Saturday the 4th of August 2018 evening atmosphere was filled with a breeze of delightfulness and joy, as the “Caribbean Musical Safari” came to life under the umbrella of the NCCAL 13th Summer Cultural Festival 2018 Programs agenda, in coordination and collaboration with the Embassy of GUYANA, South America, in Kuwait. The Concert was held on AbdulHussein AbdulRedha Theatre in Salmiyah, Kuwait, between 8-10PM, with the presence of a wide audience, totaling to around 550 people from different backgrounds. Out of this figure, 47 Ambassadors / Embassies / Diplomats and public figures. Remaining audience were from the Public society of Kuwait. The attendees enthusiastically interacted with the performing artist, Mr. Michael George, of the “One Man Steel Band”, who came all the way from USA, along with his extraordinary assistant, Business Manager, and son, Mr. Dale George, in response to a cordial invitation to perform on this festive night, and to share Caribbean music, more specifically music from the only English speaking Caribbean country, to which he is deeply rooted and affiliated, the Republic of GUYANA, with the people of Kuwait. Knowing that what makes The “One Man Steel Band” performance even more unique and uncommon amongst music lovers and people of the region, is that in addition to just one man playing several instruments which replaces music produced by a whole band, the main instrument which Mr. Michael plays is known as the “Steel Pan”. The Steel Pan is a traditional instrument native to Trinidad & Tobago, which is also where the musician Mr. Michael George originates from. It looks like drums, is made of steel, but rather than producing drum beats, it produces enchanting smooth musical tones when played. Steel Pans (steel drums) were created on the Caribbean island of Trinidad & Tobago in the 1930s, but can be traced back to the enslaved Africans who were brought to the islands during the 1700s, including GUYANA.
